How I choose every bowl

— Keira, Founder of 1st

I tested over 30 singing bowls from different workshops in Nepal. Most were fine — clear tone, decent sustain. But one stood out. When I struck it, the sound didn’t just ring; it seemed to float in the air for nearly 20 seconds, with layers of overtones that felt… alive.

That bowl came from a small family workshop in the Kathmandu Valley. They don’t have a website. They don’t mass-produce. Three generations have been hammering bowls by hand, using the same seven-metal alloy as their grandfather.

Most of our new bowls come from this family workshop. For aged and antique bowls, we source through trusted Nepalese workshop networks and test each piece individually.

When a new batch arrives, I take each bowl to my quiet corner at home. I close my eyes, strike it gently, and listen. Not just for volume — for clarity, for how long the sound lingers, for whether the vibration feels steady in my hands.

If a bowl doesn’t sing clearly, it doesn’t go to you. It’s that simple.

We don’t just admire the craftsmanship — we support it. Every stable order from 1st helps the family workshop in Kathmandu Valley plan ahead, send their children to school, and preserve their grandfather’s hammering techniques for the next generation.

Intro:

From workshops in Nepal, these older bowls carry the marks of decades — patina on the bronze, softened hammer traces, edges worn smooth by use. Measuring 15-20cm across, the bowl sits in the mid-range: large enough to hold a room's attention, compact enough for personal practice.

Unlike newly made bowls, the voice has opened with age — the fundamental is warmer, the overtones less sharp, the sustain more settled. Each bowl is individually tested for tonal clarity and sustain. No two share the same voice or the same pattern of wear.

These antique bowls are truly one of a kind — each has its own unique voice and character. The photos represent the style of the batch. When you order, we will hand‑pick a bowl with similar tone and condition, just for you.

Comes with a suede mallet and cushion.

What is the return policy?

We want you to love what you’ve chosen. If it doesn’t feel right, you have 30 days to request a return.

  • Eligibility: Items must be unused, in original packaging, with tags and proof of purchase. Buyer covers return shipping.
  • Thangkas: Due to their hand-painted and sacred nature, Thangkas are only returnable if damaged or defective. Please inspect upon arrival and contact us within 7 days.
  • Customized items (e.g., engraved singing bowls) are non-returnable unless damaged.

For full details and to start a return, please visit our [Refund Policy page] or email us at temple1st@outlook.com.

What happens next:

  • For all products except Thangkas:
We will send a free replacement or issue a full refund if a replacement isn’t available. You do notneed to return the damaged item unless we specifically request it (e.g., for quality investigation).

Where are your products manufactured?

Our products are handmade in their regions of origin, with respect for traditional craftsmanship.

Singing bowls — Hand-hammered in the Kathmandu Valley, Nepal, by a family workshop that has passed down their skills for generations.
Thangkas — Painted by master artists in Nepal and Tibet, using traditional mineral pigments on cotton canvas.
Zen items (incense holders, Zen gardens, palm leaf fans, etc.) — Crafted by small workshops across East Asia, using natural materials like ceramic, bamboo, and sand.
We visit or maintain direct contact with every workshop we work with, ensuring fair wages and ethical production. If you’d like to know more about a specific product’s origin, please reach out — we’re happy to share.

How much does the shipping cost?

Shipping costs depend on your location and the total weight of your order.

  • United States, Europe, Australia, and most other regions:
